A Heritage Rooted in Fragrance

Our story begins in 1895… In the heart of Istanbul, Jean Cesar Reboul, a French pharmacist, is on his way to visit his father, who works as an engineer in Trabzon. He arrives in Istanbul and falls in love with the city. He is mesmerised by the blend of Eastern and Western cultures, their vibrant life, elegance, and beauty. 

He then decides to open his pharmacy, the Grande Pharmacie Parisienne, at No. 94 Grand Rue de Péra (now known as Beyoğlu). His vision was to bring French pharmaceutical excellence to Istanbul. The pharmacy bears witness to the last era of the Ottoman Empire and the new Turkish Republic, a legacy that has endured to this day, since its establishment. 

In 1918, a young man named Kemal Müderrisoğlu began studying at the Darülfünun School of Pharmacy and Dentistry, seeking an apprenticeship in Istanbul. He noticed the only pharmacy on Rue de Pera and asked to work there. Reboul initially rejected him for two reasons: his inability to speak French and the fact that he was not yet a qualified pharmacist. However, Kemal was persistent. When Reboul asked him the reason, his reply was simple: “I know that you are a very different pharmacist, and therefore I want to learn the profession from you.” Feeling that Kemal Müderrisoğlu was so determined and eager, Reboul agreed on the condition that he would learn French. Not only did he learn French by attending evening language classes at the French Consulate, but he also became Reboul’s apprentice.

After graduating in 1922 and becoming one of the first pharmacists in modern Türkiye, Reboul offered him a position at the pharmacy. In 1936, their father-son relationship evolved into a business partnership, and the name of the pharmacy changed to “Kemal and Rebul Pharmacy”. This partnership flourished, and the pharmacy gained popularity when it introduced alcohol-based colognes rather than oil-based perfumes. It was an innovation and a testament to great craftsmanship at the time, and it remains so today. The formulation of all products continues to be developed with the brand's founding pharmaceutical heritage in mind. It was their diverse backgrounds that would actually serve as the foundation for their everlasting craftsmanship.

An iconic fragrance was born: Rebul Lavanda

In 1938, Rebul Lavanda was created from lavender cultivated in Reboul’s Garden and swiftly became a signature fragrance, a hallmark among gentlemen in Istanbul, a tradition that passes from father to son. It is an authentic formula that provides a sense of relaxation, freshness, and cleanliness. After releasing the cologne, Rebul Lavanda soon became a prestigious gift for homes, a luxury fragrance, and a stress-free tool for hairdressers, who massaged the cologne into their clients' hair. Today, the Rebul name is still inseparably linked with lavender cologne, an icon of sophistication and tradition. Rebul Lavanda is a sensory experience, an unforgettable sensation with the first whiff, just like all our products. After all, we are known as fragrance experts. 

In the 1938s, Reboul’s five-acre garden was sufficient to satisfy demand. However, as Rebul Lavanda gained popularity, Kemal Müderrisoğlu began seeking new raw material sources. A pivotal moment occurred in the early 1950s when he allied with a family in Grasse, France—the global perfume hub. The lavender from their farm was distilled into essential oil at a local Grasse factory and then delivered to Istanbul. These lavenders were harvested before sunrise to capture their intense aroma. Müderrisoğlu was so dedicated to maintaining his signature scent’s quality that he personally supervised the lavender harvests in Grasse, ensuring each batch met his strict standards.

After nearly two decades, in 1939, Jean Cesar Reboul transferred ownership of the pharmacy to his protégé, Kemal Müderrisoğlu, a dedicated pharmacist. The pharmacy was renamed Rebul. Kemal Müderrisoğlu infused Rebul with his vision, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the brand. The Rebul legacy grew from Istanbul to become an internationally renowned brand. And not only for our expertise in fragrances. Rebul has a remarkable heritage in natural skincare products, deeply rooted in its apothecary origins. Our customers would queue at the pharmacy for cult favourites like Night Cream No. 634208, muscle-relaxing creams, pure rosewater tonics, and mouthwashes. Personalised skincare creams were handcrafted for each customer. 

In 1970, the brand was handed over to the second generation, Mehmet Müderrisoğlu. During this period, Rebul expanded its product range and continued to feature the signature use of high-quality lavender oil from Grasse, France, in over 200 cosmetic items. In the 1980s, Rebul expanded into shampoos, soaps, shower gels, deodorants, and perfumes.

The Atelier Rebul Story Begins…

In 2013, a new chapter was added to the 130-year heritage: The Atelier Rebul. Rebul’s 3rd Generation, Kerim Müderrisoğlu, became a partner alongside Korel Bingöl and Nüket Filiba to establish the exclusive Atelier Rebul brand and boutique concept.
